Ah, the Tuscan Maremma...From the unhealthy swamp of Italy, from Cinderella of Tuscany by way of theunhealthy air (malaria=bad air), a natural paradise still partly uncontaminated, the step was long, very long.

The reclamation of the Maremma

We must thank Leopold II of Lorraine (celebrated in Piazza Dante, in Grosseto, in the act of crushing the snake representing malaria) and his great land reclamation of 1828, in addition to the subsequent reclamation works of the first decades of the twentieth century, if a territory once "Etruria's rich granary”, then became a swamp in the early Middle Ages with the raising of the bobbin lace and of the coastal water bars, and gradually transformed into a real hell for human beings, was returned to its original, wild beauty.

Now the Maremma is one of the most fascinating areas, not only of Tuscany, but of the whole of Italy.

What to see in Maremma

Wild coasts, lagoons, WWF oasis, Etruscan and Roman evidence, tuff villages, enchanted villages, hills of extraordinary beauty, expanses of vineyards, olive groves, wine and exceptional food, slow life, how can one summarize in a few lines his immense variety of beauty and of interest?

Divided into three beautiful macro-areas - Maremma Pisana, Maremma Grossetana and Maremma Laziale - crosses a large part of the Tuscan coast and of his hinterland. From Montescudaio to Bolgheri (one of the territories of choice for Italian wine), to Gulf of  Follonica, at the promontory of Punta Ala; come on Uccellina Mountains (with their famous park) to the Diaccia Botrona Nature Reserve, in Castiglion della Pescaia, at Ansedonia Promontory, to the beautiful Argentario and to the Orbetello Lagoon.

Without forgetting the internal areas with their fabulous ancient villages, like those of thetuff area (Sovana, Sorano, Pitigliano) and the thermal areas (one for all: Saturnia), the Maremma is a continuous succession of wonders, history, culture, to which one cannot remain indifferent.

And we want to talk about enchanting beaches like Mozza Tower, Cala Violina or Cala Civette? Of the inexhaustible charm of the whole Silver Coast or of the small port of Talamone?
